Whispers From The Past
Tucked away in the Guel valley, close to Valkenburg, St. Gerlach Estate is a one-of-a-kind five-star property in which to wine, dine, and simply unwind. This former monastery, built to accommodate pilgrims who came to pay homage to hermit Gerlach of Houthem, dates back to the year 1200. Its complete renovation included all 58 guestrooms, as well as the lobby and reception area. Each room surprises with a unique composition of bold gestures and meticulously matched details in colours, textures, and shapes, inviting guests to discover something new with every return.

The design is inspired by the rolling landscape of the valley, most evidently in the curvilinear shapes of the headboards. The flowing forms are paired with the contrasting geometric shapes of the custom-designed millwork, transforming cabinets into sculptural objects. The faceted design is a playful reference to the historical covered ceilings, a classic architectural detail. Combining the two brings a harmonious contrast to the space, adding spaciousness and a sense of the unexpected.
The entire design scheme consists of five main colour concepts. Atmosphere and authenticity are exemplified by exposed old beam constructions, rough brick walls, or original marlstone walls etched with names and symbols; the walls whisper stories from the past. This apparent roughness brings out the best in the soft textures and plant-inspired patterns, from the whimsical carpets to the colourful cushions.
